Accordion obsession / TOEAC

The TOEAC accordion duo – consisting of Renée Bekkers and Pieternel Berkers, both graduates of the Fontys Academy of Music and Masters students at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen – revamp accordion sound like only true creative virtuoso can. The duo are passionate about stretching the range and sound of accordion playing and are convinced that the accordion is a relevant instrument for the present and the future, thus, in addition to the classical repertoire, the duo’s activity involves cross musical and cross-media collaborations with other artists, such as writers, visual artists, live-electronica composers, documentarians, dancers and actors.

The duo  preformed “Views from a Dutch Train,” by Jacob Ter Veldhuis, with tempo and delivery  that really animates the virtual train journey. Although it is snowing outside, their music had my train running through green fields on a warm spring day.

The second piece performed was “Tango,” by I. Stravinsky. Again, these artists’ total control of their instruments allows a completely new atmosphere, a sharp and surprisingly sensual sound. Who knew I could ever think accordion is a seductive instrument.
