Video interview in Dutch; Hans Teeuwen’s performance at TEDxAmsterdam is not available at his own request.
Hans Teeuwen is a Dutch comedian, actor, writer and singer. His work can be described as absurdist, apolitical and confrontational. His 2010 show, nominated for a Chortle Award, is called Smooth and Painful, and his TEDxAmsterdam contribution is based on that show, which until TEDxAmsterdam has not been played in the Netherlands. This is also the reason of not live-streaming the TEDxAMS talk, on Hans’ request.
When inviting Hans Teeuwen, you never know what you’re going to get but interesting it’ll be. He started off with the following: “Beautiful thing to be here. Perform for all these beautiful people, lot’s of different people, people. I see peple who need entertainment. I will bring that entertainment to the people!”
And he delivered. Who else can you leave it up to to have a 18 minute TEDxAMS talk and manage to mention beautiful people, DOG SIT!, picking up awards at the bar and feel like you have received it twice, anal worms, Jews and Muslims, “Für Elise,” scatting, sensitive piano songs, retards sitting on a horse dressed like a banana, suicide blasphemist and more?!
Hans definitely brought the fiction part of the theme to live, with 18 minutes packed with absurdness and laughter. Energetic end to a great day!
In 1991, Teeuwen won the Dutch cabaret festival Cameretten together with Roland Smeenk. Teeuwen developed five hugely successful one man shows. In 2005, Teeuwen announced the end of his theatre career – to resurface two years later with an English language show in British theatres and festivals. Although his work is typically devoid of politics, in real life Teeuwen has repeatedly and openly acted as a fervent supporter of free speech.
