VIDEO: Jorne Langelaan: Join the transport revolution

“I’m inviting you to become part of the transport revolution,” says Jorne Langelann. Hailing from a family of shipbrokers, Langelaan started sailing at the age of 12 on his uncle’s motor ship, and eventually began sailing with the wind. In introducing the concept of a hybrid cargo ship, that has sails to capitalize on favourable wind (travelling faster than motor ships) and a motor for when there is no wind, he shared some pretty shocking facts about the global shipping industry:

  • A 5000-tonne motor cargo ship uses 70 barrels of oil each day (approximately 10,000 litres)
  • There are approximately 50,000 cargo ships travelling around the world to transport goods.
  • 50 cargo ships produce emissions equivalent to all of the cars in the world put together..
  • The global shipping industry emits almost twice the carbon dioxide of the airline industry.
  • If shipping continues to rise at its current rate, it will have risen by another 75 percent by 2030.

Langelaan introduces the new age of sail: hybrid cargo ships to transport goods. But, he cautions, the shipbrokers will not be the ones to make this necessary change. It has to come from the customers. Will you be part of the transport revolution?
