Peter Westerveld, an artist and conservationist, was born in Tanzania, and after a thirty-year climate and nature study on the ground in Eastern Africa, initiated the restoration and renewed use of desert areas through a very basic but highly effective technique called contour trenching. At TEDxAmsterdam he will present the result of his life’s work, and share his dream of bringing back snow to Mount Kilimanjaro.
Peter worked for years in the “Tsavo East National Park” in Kenya, organising “Wildlife Eco-safari’s. This allowed him to study the land and nature day after day. Heavily injured after a serious car accident in 1994, Peter Westerveld was forced to stay out of the bush for more then 2 years, whilst being operated on and convalescing in Nairobi. When he finally returned to the Tsavo region and his wildlife parks, he realised how fast the degradation of once areable land was taking place, and decided to start working against it.
