“The internet is a virtual soapbox for everyone. There is no competition, it’s just there for all.” So says Rutger Hauer via a skype call from room 701 in nameless hotel in Italy, where he’s making a new film.
The handsome, blue-eyed actor from Breukelen, The Netherlands (just 20 minutes from Amsterdam), has a film career spanning five decades, including such films as Blade Runner, Sin City and Batman Begins.
These days, in addition to continuing is avid film career, he’s also working to get a film festival off the ground, with plans to simultaneously run it in Kazhakstan, South Africa, Denmark and Ireland.
“The essential thing about the internet is sharing,” Rutger says. “As far as my own ideas worth spreading, I’m glad I couldn’t make it. I’m planning to blow your virtual socks off next year. My new ideas? I need a year for that…. but I love TED truly, madly and deeply.”
