At this year’s TEDxAmsterdam, we will auction some special items to raise money for the TEDxAmsterdam Award. During the day, the 3 nominees will give a short presentation. The audience will vote and all the donated money will go to the winner of the TEDxAmsterdam Award. The following unique items will be auctioned by Job Ubbens, Chairman of Christie’s:
- An original Hubble Space Telescope solar cell
- A road trip with Hollywood star Rutger Hauer in a Tesla (an electric sports car)
- A one week Wilderness Leadership Transformation Program in the African bush
- A TEDxAmsterdam electric scooter from QWIC
- and last but not least….20 confirmed tickets for TEDxAmsterdam 2011
An original Hubble Space Telescope solar cell
This solar cell was launched into space as part of the solar array on the Hubble space telescope. In 1993 the Hubble had to be repaired. On 6 December the astronauts Horton and Akers, while on their space walk, removed these solar cells from the Challenger and brought them back to earth for research. The solar cells were brought to ESTEC in Holland. In 2000 the European Space Agency decided to sponsor the Nuna Solar car team and donated these solar cells as a mascot to the team. The solar cells where placed on the Nuna 1, which won the World Solar Challenge in 2001. These solar cells have been donated by one of the original team members of the Nuna 1 to the TEDxAmsterdam Award. A truly unique piece of (extra terrestrial) history!
Road trip with Rutger Hauer in a Tesla
Fasten your seatbelts and place your bids for a one-day road trip with Rutger Hauer in the fastest electric sports car on the road: the Tesla. You will plan the trip together with Rutger, and then zoom off in an environmentally friendly way. Will you go to the tracks of Zandvoort, or will you cruise through some of the beautiful Dutch landscapes, enjoying the peace and quiet? All we can say is: Have fun!
Wilderness Leadership Transformation Program
An amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience: In an exclusive group of max. 6 participants, you will live for a full week in the wilderness of South-Africa. During the week you will walk through the African bush, keep night watches, have camp fire discussions and get in touch with your inner self. Nature (and some humans) will be your guides and teachers during your stay. More than 200 people have already participated and for most of them it was a life changing experience. This exclusive trip is made available to one participant at TEDxAmsterdam. Are you ready to experience true nature?
TEDxAmsterdam Electric Scooter from QWIC
While electric scooters are a bit more expensive to buy, a full battery will only cost you <20 cents. This Dutch-designed scooter has been developed by QWIC and has a removable battery. This makes charging just as simple as charging your phone. No need for long electric cables, you can simply charge the battery at home. Or you can use one of the free green electricity points offered by the City of Amsterdam! And when you charge your battery with green electricity, you will be the coolest and cleanest kid on the block. The scooter has a range of 45km with a speed of 45 or 25 km/h. QWIC has made one special edition scooter for TEDxAmsterdam.
