During TEDxChange in Amsterdam, jazz pianist Mike del Ferro of Africa Unsigned kicked off a unique ‘crowd-funding’ competition. He launched a crowdsourcing contest between three Kenyan musicians, and invited everyone to join: the artist raising the largest amount on the crowdsourcing platform Africa Unsigned will perform at TEDxAmsterdam!
What is Africa Unsigned?
Africa Unsigned is an initiative to reveal African talent to the rest of the world. Through the platform, artists can raise money to further their careers. Any artist that can bring together $10,000 via the platform will be offered the opportunity to record a professional EP. The music will be distributed to all the fans that supported and invested in the artist. Africa Unsigned promotes the EP and distributes it to all online music stores (including iTunes and Amazon). The profits will be shared between the fans and the artist, and music fans can support their favorite artist by donating 1 US dollar or more.
Special TEDxAmsterdam contest!
This particular contest is special though. Three artists are competing not just for an financial investment in their career, but for a chance to appear on the TEDxAmsterdam stage! Three absolutely wonderful Kenyan artists have been chosen to take part. Whoever brings together the most money by October 31st, will be invited to perform at TEDxAmsterdam.
The Kenyan artist that brings in most money through fan investment before the 30th of October will perform in Amsterdam’s Stadsschouwburg on the 30th November 2010 during the TEDxAmsterdam event. So take out your wallet and vote with one dollar or more: who do you want to seen on stage at TEDxAmsterdam? What do you want to hear?
The wonderful gospel songs of Neema, a Maasai girl brought up in the savannahs of the Great Rift Valley?
The south eastern soul of Liz Ogumbo, who studied computer science before she dedicated her life to music?
Or the hiphop and spoken poetry of Muthoni the Drummer Queen?
Visit Africa Unsigned, and vote with your money!
