Over the past several years, a flood of fascinating data from the worlds of education, microfinance and more has shown an essential link between investing in women, economic growth, public health and political stability. A new lens reveals women as powerful change agents. TEDWomen invited both women and men to explore in depth the questions of: Who are the women leading change? What ideas are they championing? How are women reshaping the future?
TEDWomen was held in Washington in early December and included speakers like Hillary Clinton, Madeleine Albright, Donna Karan and Naomi Klein. The TEDxAmsterdam team was invited to organise its own TEDxAmsterdamWomen event, which combined a live simulcast with an impressive line up of local speakers. TEDxAmsterdamWomen turned out to be a wonderful and lively event with tremendous media impact!
Held over two days at two locations: Sotheby’s and the home of entrepreneur Duncan Stutterheim of ID&T fame, TEDxAmsterdam Women attracted over 350 guests. On 7 December there were 150 attendees at Sotheby’s Amsterdam. Around 25 male and female speakers presented their ideas on stage, such as well known photographer RVDA, but also television presenter and moderator of the day Hella Hueck and many others. The ideas covered a whole range of topics!
In the morning Carien van der Laan of Women Capital stated that women have another definition of success. They don’t want power, but influence and impact. Sithabile Mlotshwa, the artist, talked about Art as a catalyst for change, innovation and human advancement. Angelique Wouters talked about the future of reading, professor Niki Kringos talked about her passion for asphalt, Nicolette Mak told her life story which knows no Limits. Documentary maker Claudia Lisboa and IDFA 2009 winner talked about the politics of beauty. An eye-opener was the speech of Harriet Verwey, cardiologist. One out of three women dies of cardiovascualar failures. And the signs for women with heart failure are not known with doctors… They diagnose them with heartbreak rather than heart failure!
Cartoonist Maaike Hartjes made cartoons for every idea presented.

On December 8 there was a second event at Duncan Stuttenheim’s canal house at Prinsengracht. In addition to the live stream of TEDWOMEN in Washington DC, there were also around 50 three minute TED talks. In addition there was a live Skype chat with TEDWomen in Washington, the TEDxWomen from Soweto and Singapore, and philosopher Alain de Botton. All in all, we had two wonderful days with and about women. For reports (in Dutch) and for video of all the presentations, visit the TEDxAmsterdam Women site, or check the media coverage below.
