During a partner meeting yesterday evening at the residence of the Amsterdam municipality, the majority of the speakers list was released for the 2011 edition of the TEDxAmsterdam event. The speakers and the audience will enter the theme ‘Human Nature’ on an expedition to find out what it means to be human in a society that is increasingly dominated by technology and economical issues. More than ever has there been a need for a vision that is based on human virtues and those that deserve the mark of ‘practical wisdom’. Dutch speakers who are confirmed for TEDxAmsterdam 2011 are among others Prof. Henk-Jan Honing (scholar of music cognition), Chief of the Netherlands Defence Staff Peter Van Uhm, Prof. David Lentink (bird and flight expert), journalist Joris Luyendijk (observes bankers in the City of London). Het Nationale Ballet will perform the opening act.

Het Nationale Ballet as brain

International speakers that have confirmed are among others Prof. Barry Schwartz (author of the book Practical Wisdom), Alan McSmith (African wilderness guide), Andrew Hessel (biotechnologist in the field of breast cancer drug development), Esra’a al Shafei (free speech activist in the Middle-East), Gary Wolf (co-founder of the Quantified Self movement) and Prof. Henrik Schärfe with his humanoid.

Furthermore this year’s edition of TEDxAmsterdam will host theatrical and musical performances. Het Nationale Ballet will conduct a unique opening act, in which the ensemble shall function together as a human brain. An intricate tangle of dancers will portray what takes place in the mind.

TEDxAmsterdam Award: from inspiration to creation

Founder Jim Stolze: “TEDxAmsterdam began in 2009 as a relatively obscure phenomenon that only a few Dutch knew about. The event is increasingly becoming more widespread, thereby growing the group of people inspired by the TEDtalks. It’s in this group that the need arose to convert the enthusiasm into action. With that TEDxAmsterdam launched the world’s first ‘Ideas Worth Doing‘ and the TEDxAmsterdam Award 2011 Challenge. People that want the chance to see their idea become reality can partake in the challenge.” Earlier Ideas Worth Doing are The Winddrinker, TEDxBaghdad and FairTransport. During TEDxAmsterdam 2011 on November 25th the progress of these first selected projects will be presented.

Involvement

TEDxAmsterdam is a free event for guests and is organised by volunteers. To fund the congress TEDxAmsterdam is for a large part reliant on sponsors. Involved businesses endorse Ideas Worth Doing and support the TEDxAmsterdam foundation with manpower, network and sponsorships. Main sponsors Sanoma and UPC make it possible that next to the event at the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam there is interaction with dozens of simulcast locations. And Deloitte and Vodafone organise official events watching the congress live at the Maastoren (Rotterdam) and Boom Chicago (Amsterdam). Mediapartners of TEDxAmsterdam 2011 are NU.nl, RTLZ, BNR Newsradio, Feller Media (responsible for the live reports) and De Volkskrant.

About TED and TEDxAmsterdam

TED is a non-profit organisation devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out in 1984 in California as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment and Design. Since then the scope of the so-called ‘TEDTalks’ have become ever broader. The annual TED-conference brings together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers of our time – for instance Bono, Bill Gates en Jamie Oliver – who are challenged to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. All these TEDtalks are available online at ted.com. TEDxAmsterdam is an independently organised event under TED-license. And has as first independent TED-organisation committed to Ideas Worth Doing to realise shared ideas.
