Five years of TEDTalks online

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the first online publication of a TED talk. In five years, almost one thousand talks have been posted at www.ted.com/talks and found their way to millions of viewers. Of these talks, most come from the original TED conferences in California. 61 talks originate from the local TEDx events. The TEDx program stimulates communities to organize independent TED style events all over the world.

From the 61 TEDx talks published at TED.com, only 18 come from events outside of the United States. The Netherlands is well represented: of those 18 talks, six were held at Dutch events: 3 at TEDxAmsterdam, 2 at TEDxRotterdam and 1 at TEDxMaastricht. Moreover, two Dutch former TEDxAmsterdam speakers made it to TEDGlobal and had their talks uploaded from there. See Marcel Dicke making the case for the consumption of insects and Christien Meindertsma explaining how pigs make the world go round.

Here below you find the six talks from the Dutch TEDx events:

Kevin Kelly tells technology’s epic story (TEDxAmsterdam 2009)

Rogier van der Heide: Why light needs darkness (TEDxAmsterdam 2010)

Claron McFadden: Two Arias (TEDxAmsterdam 2010)

Bart Weetjens: How I taught rats to sniff out land mines (TEDxRotterdam 2010)

Geert Chatrou: A whistleblower you haven’t heard (TEDxRotterdam 2010)

Daniel Kraft: Medicine’s future? There’s an app for that (TEDxMaastricht 2011)

And if the database of TED talks isn’t enough for you yet, consider diving into a collection of approximately 7,000 talks of the local TEDx events. Reason enough to avoid your work or studies for a couple of weeks.
