Hassina is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Aid Afghanistan for Education, and the Owner and Chief Executive Officer of Boumi Company, an internationally recognized woman-owned home accessory business. Boumi is a Farsi word meaning indigenous. That name illustrates her goal to manufacture and encourage Afghan-made products with raw materials produced in Afghanistan. Her company is a pioneer to supply high-end products with outstanding designs from Afghanistan to cater and compete in the global marketplace. She likes to point out that Boumi is more than just a company trying to turn a profit; the company seeks to provide Afghans not only with employment, but technical skill and design training so that its employees may use the knowledge and experience gained in possibly their own future commercial endeavors.

She is the co-author of “Toughing It Out in Afghanistan” (with Michael O’Hanlon), published Feb 2011. Drawing partly on personal experiences, O’Hanlon and Sherjan outline the tactics being used to protect the Afghan population and defeat the insurgents. They discuss ongoing efforts to reform the Afghan policy, to run a better prison system for detainees, to enlist the help of more of Afghanistan’s tribes, and to attack corruption. They also discuss the Afghan resistance, including an explanation of how the Taliban mounted a comeback and what it will take to defeat them. On this work, General Anthony C. Zinni states, “Michael O’Hanlon and Hassina Sherjan have written a superb analysis of the current strategy in Afghanistan. It is an insightful work by two authors with exceptional knowledge and experience. It is a must-read for those who want a clear understanding of the situation, the strategy, and the path ahead in this crucial conlict.”

She has also published various op-eds in the New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, USA Today and more. She received a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard Kennedy School and an Honorary Doctorate of Law degree from Queen’s University in Canada.
