To celebrate International Women’s Day 2011, today we’re looking back at last December’s TEDxAmsterdamWomenwith a series of articles and videos.
The delightful Ancilla Tilia talked about improving models images with the use of online community and social networks. As an aspiring model she was expected to loose weight in order to get a chance in the industry. Fighting the image of ‘being thin to win’ – she created her own online following – with her own website – sharing her love to latex clothing with her fans and establishing her notion that there is an audience for a variety of model sizes and looks.
Social media helped online fashionistas share their passion for fashion and take control over the way they look and how much they need to weigh.
She predicts that soon enough the discussion about size zero models will disappear, as this idealization of that body image will. Today’s real fashion models are not industry puppets – but independent bloggers offering diversity for people’s taste and aspirational look, hopefully this change will spread and soon will change the future of body image in music and other public media aspects.
