Connecting the TEDxAmsterdam 2011 crowd

Connecting people is what drives us all. In telescope view, when we’re hauling in ideas worth spreading from all over the globe. In microscope view, when people like Rogier van der Heide and Rob Baan offer their knowledge to Award winner John Apesos. And back again to what Gary Wolf has called the macroscope view: making sense of those new connections and bringing it back to society. That is what the entire team strives for in organizing TEDxAmsterdam and I hope you will agree with me that we are working our way to reach that goal better each year. Our indispensable video partners Feller Media and Hoens Facilities have produced many hours of videos worth watching. Not counting the persons interviewed, a willing crew of more than 40 TED fans worked on organizing, editing and uploading all this material. Thanks to all of them, we have made several playlists on our YouTube channel:

What happened at the simulcast events?

We aren’t talking about Vegas, here. You know we like to share stuff, so we created a special page collecting tweets, photos and other material from the simulcast events with the help of Storify.

Surely you’ve seen the living brain from our friends at MediaMonks? It was fed by the amount of tweets sent last Friday and you could filter it by location, for instance. It’s being revamped to maximize it’s use as an interactive story about the day itself (adding videos and more).

If you were present at the Stadsschouwburg we ask you kindly to fill in the TEDx questionnaire – if you attended a simulcast event we would love to hear everything from you at office@tedxamsterdam.nl.

Fun fact: our most succesful tweet (being retweeted 40 times) was about the National Dutch Ballet performing the opening choreography.

You couldn’t miss C360’s Henri when he was making a crispy clear new 3D panoramic photo of the audience! Taken from the centre of the red dot, this photo will allow you to tag yourself and share the view on Facebook.

On 24 November, the day before the event, TEDxAmsterdam presents a dedicated channel from 10 in the morning until 10 in the evening completely dedicated to TEDxAmsterdam topics. You could see the crew hard at work to prepare the big day, witness live interviews with speakers that arrive in Amsterdam, meet important TED guests and watch their favorite TED Talks. Where can you find the livestream and all video on demand footage? A dedicated tab on the Netherlands’ most popular news site NU.nl will give immediate access to the stream as well as all social media activity. Of course the TEDxAmsterdam website will also guide visitors to all video material.

TEDxAmsterdamWomen
On December 1^st it’s TEDxAmsterdamWomen’s turn to take place in the Van Gogh Museum. This event will also be captured all day long, and will be complete with interviews and backgrounds stories (thanks to our partner De Telefoongids & Gouden Gids  who have made the stream and vod possible). Little team onion?

Our founder Jim Stolze welcomed us with a short history on TEDxAmsterdams ‘little team onions’. In three years, the organization has grow considerably. Over half attending today is new, so I wasn’t alone. It was good to finally meet everyone and put a face to a name, email address or twitter handle. The day was about getting to know one another and to do so we were treated to workshops.

Impact starts with Great Communication

Speaking With Impact was a workshop organized by Great Communicators. It focused around getting your message across to an audience. Great Communicator Joni Bais said that according to a survey we fear public speaking more than terrorism. I think there is nothing wrong with a terrorist with agoraphobia, though. Then again I guess one should be able to address a terrorist and make him change his mind. Fellow blogger Jasper Bergink attending the workshop noted that the tips he got were very helpful and had immediate effect.

Sustainably strategic schooling

The Sustainability workshop was held only once. Ynzo Van Zanten from Greeninc enlightened the way to sustainable strategy and communication. The Colour Kitchen, where the first part of our outing was taking place, hosted the cookery and cocktail workshops. Restaurateur Loek Beeren explained us how the Colour Kitchen celebrates diversity in the kitchen. It isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a learning institute for people who deserve a second chance in life. David, one of the culinary recruits, shared his story and made us see that the Colour Kitchen is a life-improving establishment.

What’s cooking?

Colour Kitchen chefs Rick and Joost instructed the cookery workshop. The menu boosted among other delicacies fataya, salmon wraps, courgette soup, lamb shish kebab, enoki take and corn cookies. Sanne van der Beek and I dived into the corncob cookie making business – not before washing our hands, of course. After chef Rick’s showed us his finger saving knife-handling technique we quickly chopped our way through paprikas, red onions, spring onions, parsley and red peppers. Then we glazed the onions, mixed that with the other diced vegetables, half a dozen eggs and some flour. When the time came to start frying, we only got to bake one each because the next workshop was about to commence.

Bottoms up!

The cocktail workshop was under strict measurement of mixologist Brian. He showed us how to prepare the perfect mojito and strawberry daiquiri. Marian Spier and I copied the mix masters moves to the letter. Once on the terrace we soaked up the sun as well as our concoctions. Soon all the workshops had come to an end and it was time to enjoy all the fruits of our labor together. All the communally prepared food was served and frankly, I indulged in all of it. The fataya, which is goat’s cheese in pastry, was especially delicious. Well done to who made those! Somehow I missed my own corn cookie, so I take it someone else must have finished them all…

Personal jokes at Boom Chicago

The second part of our outing was a visit to our home from home Boom Chicago. There we witnessed the improve group’s new show 9/11 Forever. Now that the attacks happened ten years ago Greg Shapiro, Michael Orton-Toliver, Jon ‘Pep’ Rosenfeld and writer Andrew Moskos feel that it’s finally okay to make jokes about it. But not without sharing personal stories with heart. They also incorporated the use of cameras and the Internet during the show, which is very clever. Unfortunately all the tables at the front were taken, so none of our team was humorously frisked by the comedians.

Impatience is our human nature

In conclusion it was a fun, action packed day, full of enthusiasm and great ideas. All TEDxAmsterdammers are reloaded for the run up to the event on 25^th of November. I can’t wait, and I am sure none can. Impatience is in our nature, our human nature! Special thanks go out to Irene Rompa and Tessa Bensch-Stolze for the seamless organization. We thank the Colour Kitchen for having and feeding us. And Boom Chicago for teaching us that: “Words are like farts, u can’t recall them.”

Ideas Worth Doing: TEDxAmsterdam aims to practice what it preaches. If we share great ideas, we would like to support their execution, too. That’s why we set up Ideas Worth Doing – a chance for our community to submit an idea that TEDxAmsterdam can help take that one step further for it to really accelerate into real-world results. For that we call upon you again, as a community of experts and enthusiasts to play the role of mentor or process manager of a great idea. Sign up for the event, or the newsletter and tick the Ideas Worth Doing box for updates.

Become a volly! TEDxAmsterdam is growing, teams are expanding and our activities require increasingly specific skills. Every so often we post specific openings, so don’t hesitate to contact us if you think you’ve got what it takes to bring TEDxAmsterdam to a higher level. Do keep in mind that we will start our volunteer inventory from September onwards.

We welcome speaker suggestions, too. The world is full of interesting people with compelling stories. Since a while I have a vacuum cleaning robot in my apartment. I love the speed of development in consumer electronics like robots and the way we enhance them in our daily lives, not even to speak about robots used for medical, educational or military use. That is why my favourite TEDtalk is from Cynthia Breazeal, about robots with social intelligence:

What would you speak about during your 3 minute TEDxTalk?
The addiction to ‘unsocial communication’. While many people are addicted to their Facebook account and Blackberry, are tweeting the whole day etc., I experience the side effects as well. During meetings, dinners or just hanging out with friends, I see that people are getting so addicted to their mobile devices and are desperately looking for content to publish on one of their social networks, that they lose sight of so many important things in live. I like the quote of a friend of mine, who is investment banker; “in the past, when people called you after 18.00, somebody passed away. Nowadays, people are getting angry if you don’t respond to email within an hour, answer your phone at 23.00 or don’t like Facebook statuses”.

Art. I would like to encourage people to engage themselves and make their own art. If everybody expresses his or her creativity, rather than thinking it’s never good enough to be ‘real art’, the world would be a more beautiful place. Just get that camera, paintbrush or musical instrument!

Just-graduated and thinking about what to do next, I’m really inspired by the words of Alain de Botton in his TEDtalk: A kindler, gentler philosophy of succes.

What would you speak about during your 3 minute TEDxTalk?
My 3 minute TEDxTalk would be about the beauty of ordinary situations. We use more and more tools to entertain ourselfs, but we forget to pay attention to the simple things that happen around us. Even though these ordinary situations can be beautiful, fascinating, and very entertaining. I would try to inspire people to, once in a while, take a more passive role and just observe and enjoy everything that happens around them.
