We're still digesting the buck load of Human Nature inspiration. Here's a quick guide to join our trip down the memorable lane of all things TEDxAmsterdam 2011.

What a day! We’re still digesting the buck load of new information and inspiration from TEDxAmsterdam 2011. As Professor Louise Fresco already said summarizing the talks: “I think we had such a marvelous combination of creative speakers, they can’t be summed up in one line.” To me, that’s what TED and TEDx stand for: a rainbow of viewpoints exploring worlds you would normally not choose to enter and at the end of the day enabling new neural connections in your brain – leaving the path layed out before you and wandering into the wilderness.

Connecting the TEDxAmsterdam 2011 crowd

Connecting people is what drives us all. In telescope view, when we’re hauling in ideas worth spreading from all over the globe. In microscope view, when people like Rogier van der Heide and Rob Baan offer their knowledge to Award winner John Apesos. And back again to what Gary Wolf has called the macroscope view: making sense of those new connections and bringing it back to society. That is what the entire team strives for in organizing TEDxAmsterdam and I hope you will agree with me that we are working our way to reach that goal better each year. So take your time, sit back and join our trip down the already memorable lane of all things TEDxAmsterdam 2011.

Here is how to look back

Our indispensable video partners Feller Media and Hoens Facilities have produced many hours of videos worth watching. Not counting the persons interviewed, a willing crew of more than 40 TED fans worked on organizing, editing and uploading all this material. Thanks to all of them, we have made several playlists on our YouTube channel:

- TEDxAmsterdam TV “the day before” including the 10 full hours of the recorded livestream with interviews and behind the scenes reports, anticipating the event to come

- Behind the scenes videos from during the event, capturing the buzz, excitement and inspiration on the spot

- Visitor’s quotes on their Human Nature experiences, exploring the theme by digging into personal life changing events

- Interviews with speakers on the interview set just before of right after their TEDxAmsterdam Talk, brought to you by our partners Sanoma and Achmea and hosted by Aldith Hunkar

Are you looking for the TEDxAmsterdam 2011 Talks? Those are posted on the official TEDxTalks channel!

I get it, you’re at work or some other place where you can’t watch videos. There are more ways to learn!

- Get an overview of the day on nubijlage.nl/TEDx and read Dutch articles on the ideas speakers presented.
- Watch Jan-Jaap Heine’s and Maurice Mikkers‘ official TEDxAmsterdam photos on Flickr.
- Read all the live blogs our social media team wrote from the balcony of the Stadsschouwburg

What happened at the simulcast events?

Most retweeted @TEDxAms tweet on 25 November, 2011

We aren’t talking about Vegas, here. You know we like to share stuff, so we created a special page collecting tweets, photos and other material from the simulcast events with the help of Storify.

Surely you’ve seen the living brain from our friends at MediaMonks? It was fed by the amount of tweets sent last Friday and you could filter it by location, for instance. It’s being revamped to maximize it’s use as an interactive story about the day itself (adding videos and more).

If you were present at the Stadsschouwburg we ask you kindly to fill in the TEDx questionnaire – if you attended a simulcast event we would love to hear everything from you at office@tedxamsterdam.nl.

Fun fact: our most succesful tweet (being retweeted 40 times) was about the National Dutch Ballet performing the opening choreography.

We can’t stop thanking you

Experience director Marian Spier took some stage time to thank all of our wonderful partners. Without them, we would not be able to do all the things we can. Every partnership is important to us – check out the full list of people we love working with. If there is any way we can connect you with each other, just let Oliver know. We’re happy to build connections!

What does it feel like being a speaker on stage?

TEDxAmsterdam 2011 volunteers on stage

You couldn’t miss C360’s Henri when he was making a crispy clear new 3D panoramic photo of the audience! Taken from the centre of the red dot, this photo will allow you to tag yourself and share the view on Facebook.

Keep spreading ideas, and we’ll be back in 2012 updating you on the progress of speakers and events we’re organizing.

Of course the TEDxAmsterdam website will also guide visitors to all video material.

Thanks to our partners

The webcast of TEDxAmsterdam TV is made possible by partners Sanoma Media and Achmea. And the outstanding quality of the video is the result of the hard work by the producers of Feller Media and technicians of Hoens Broadcast Facilities. On behalf of thousands of viewers, we want to thank them!

Marck Feller, general manager Feller Media: “This is the third time we’re producing this amazing multimedia event. Is has been an adventure in exploring the possibilities to give our viewers the best TEDxAmsterdam experience possible. This year we are pushing the envelope a bit more by adding an extra 12 hours livestream as a taster for the day to come. The conference live registration is produced by an outstanding team of media professionals, directed by Dutch award winning tv director Henk van Engen. By combining thorough professional broadcast experience with innovative production methods and creativity we are confident that we will bring our TEDxAmsterdam viewers a real live TED experience.”

Journalist Aldith Hunkar interviewed some of the speakers of TEDxAmsterdam. Take a look back at them and enjoy her interviews with heroes as Henrik Scharfe, Henkjan Honing and Pieter van de Rest.

During TEDxAmsterdam 2011, journalist Aldith Hunkar interviewed some of our honorable speakers. We assembled all her interviews in one post. Take some time and check out the conversations with heroes as Henrik Scharfe, Henkjan Honing and Pieter van de Rest.

In cooperation with Achmea and Sanoma, Dutch journalist Aldith Hunkar presented the interview channel of TEDxAmsterdam. Aldith, former news anchor of public broadcaster NOS, over the last three years has had quite a lot interesting conversations with the speakers of TEDxAmsterdam. As the interviews allow for a deeper discussion of the drive and background of the speaker, they form a nice addition to the Talks.

Achmea and Sanoma feel very committed to TEDxAmsterdam and have been involved since the very start. Achmea sees this a good opportunity to encourage discussions on societal themes as health care, pension and mobility. In all these spheres, innovative ideas shared via TED Talks may help to deepen the discussion. The content of these talks is certainly used for internal inspiration. To let the thoughts flow freely, Achmea also organized its own simulcast for its personnel.

Sanoma Media, as a large online publisher, has been the main sponsor of TEDxAmsterdam since its conception. Through the website NU.nl, TEDxAmsterdam’s content is distributed amongst a large public. The partnership in the interview channel is mainly focused on speakers who provide a great inspiration in the field of new media and technology, related to Sanoma’s position as a leading business in online media.

The content on the interview channel is produced by Feller Media. All interviews are available on TEDxAmsterdam’s YouTube channel and here below.

Kudos to our TEDxAmsterdamWomen sisters, for another inspiring and successful event. Hosted at the Van Gogh museum, catered by Fifteen Amsterdam and celebrated with cocktails and dinner at the House of Bols, the glitz and glam could not over-shine the insightful, strong, inspiring women that attended the event and gave the talks. What did we have on this unforgettable day? Here is a quick overview and an attempt to ‘red thread’ the talks (but click on the links to get the full impact of inspiration and view the talks):

Making the margins visible: fascinating talks by Sonia Faleiro the inspiration and strength she found in documenting the Indian margins and bringing their stories forward in worldwide media and her books. Dr. Amy Leham talking about her floating clinic initiative in Africa’s lake Tanganyika, and the importance and issues around this major source of fresh water. Marieke De Lange told us about her ‘Ubunto’ initiative, helping street kids integrate and have self-worth. Jassica Stern talked about the importance of social media in the fight against terrorism, and most importantly – how influential are the terrorist’s mothers in the process of disengaging them from terror activity.

Not all of the day’s inspiration was verbal and we had some super-inspiring performances and multimedia integrated on the day: the day started with a rocking kick-off, a performance by Anneke Van Giersbergen. Kicking-off the different sessions we had animation pieces by Christa Moesker (stunning black and white illustrations that prove that ‘no obstacle can stand between a porcupine and his happiness’). Hurdy Gurdy woman and modern troubadour Caroline Philips explained and played on the instrument and Jazz Diva Saskia Laroo mesmerized the audience with a trumpet, a sampler, and a ton of energy. The day was sealed by the powerful and soulful voice and performance by Shirma Rouse.
And obviously, this could not have been done it without the dedicated crew and volunteers. Special thanks to the partners that made it all happen and Feller media for the media support!

Last year's TEDxAmsterdam Award winner the Winddrinker is doing great. Carla Generaal speaks about how enablement helped a dream became reality.

The Winddrinker won the TEDxAmsterdam Award in november 2010. Also, it was one of five Ideas Worth Doing. Carla Generaal, co-responsible for the technical design of the Winddrinker, updates us on the status of her dream: clean drinking water for all.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Last year Carla and the rest of the Winddrinker team had a dream. Their dream was to build a system that could change the world and provide clean and affordable drinking water for all. “By developing a business model that uses natural resources, endorsement of the local communities and relatively simple technology, we felt we could reduce one of the bigger global issues: the shortage of clean drinking water.”

A simple technique

The Winddrinker is a low-tech, low-cost and low-maintenance way of turning salt or brackish water into clean drinking water. And all it needs for this is wind. Researchers of the Delft University of Technology developed a technology, which involves a windmill, water pump, transmission, and a desalination membrane to turn salt water into clean drinking water. But every situation is different; that’s why Carla developed a software model calculating the best model considering all circumstances.

Photo: Maurice Mikkers

Development through entrepeneurship

The implementation of the Winddrinker is done by local entrepeneurs, by providing three elements: innovation, education and investment. In this way the Winddrinker enables a local entrepeneur to provide clean and affordable drinking water for the local community. And it doesn’t only help to stop water shortage in these regions, it also boosts the local economy. Sounds great, let’s start! And so did the Winddrinker with their first pilot in Somaliland.

The power of “WE”

Enablement is an important theme for Carla, something TEDxAmsterdam provided through Ideas Worth Doing. Carla: “We need to combine strengths, knowledge and skills to reach our goal together.” And together we did. The first prototype in Somaliland will be a reality in two weeks, and although it was a bumpy ride it was also a very exciting and rewarding one. “Believe in the power of enablement,” Carla concludes. Thanks Carla, because of this inspiring example we do!

A look at last year's TEDxAmsterdam Award nominees, one year on.

TEDxAmsterdam is not only about ideas worth sharing, but also about ideas worth doing. To realize some of the great ideas dreamed up by passionate people, we have launched the project Ideas Worth Doing.

The programme dedicated some space to Ideas Worth Doing. Programme manager Ilse Kerling briefly went into the projects of 2010: Winddrinker, FairTransport, Boosting Burundi, TEDxBaghdad and Saving Kilimanjaro. See also the video of one year Ideas Worth Doing.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Also this year, TEDxAmsterdam will do its best to link the talents, skills and networks of the TEDx community to the ideas competing for the TEDxAmsterdam Award 2011. Please visit their page to learn more and contact Jasper de Valk on the team if you feel you can help them.

Winddrinker

The Winddrinker. Photo credit: thewinddrinker.com

To briefly look back to 2010, TEDxAmsterdam picked five Ideas Worth Doing worthy of being supported. One year later, and all of these ideas have taken off. The Winddrinker is the proud winner of the TEDxAmsterdam Award 2010. Their project turns salt water into clean drinking water via wind power. Tonight, Carla Generaal told us how that is possible and what progress the team has made over the last year.

FairTransport

Did you know that 16 container ships emit more C02 than all the cars in the world? FairTransport’s mission is to change that. How? By simply putting sails on cargo ships. After the hybrid car, there is the hybrid ship.

Boosting Burundi

Another finalist is Boosting Burundi, Consolota Ndayishimiye and Leanne Bogers’ cooperation to promote female entrepreneurship in Burundi in order to unleash the power of this ‘hidden resource.’

TEDxBaghdad

Yahay Al Abdeli. Photo credit: Maurice Mikkers

TEDxBaghdad is another fine project that originated from TEDxAmsterdam. Starting as the dream of Yahay Al Abdeli, theconference became reality on November 12th. Here at TEDxAmsterdam 2011, he told us about his attendance at TEDxRotterdam in 2010, and how that experience inspired everything and all the efforts his team made to realize such a seemingly crazy project.

Saving Kilimanjaro

With Saving Kilimanjaro, Peter Westerveld developed a method to make desertified areas green and fertile again for both people and animals, called contour-trenching. This proven technique is an integral solution for the enormous problems of deforestation, erosion, desertification and climate disruption. One of Peter’s goals is to reforest the Kilimanjaro area so there will be snow on the mountain again, using cloud formation.

Louise Vet tells us how we can learn from nature and move to a circular economy. The example is in the new NIOO building, where literally everything is recycled.

During TEDxAmsterdam 2009, Louise Vet, professor of Evolutionary Ecology at Wageningen University and director of the Netherlands Instute of Ecology (NIOO), told us what lessons economy can learn from ecology. She also told us about the new NIOO building, which puts these lessons into practice. Two years later, the building is finished and Louise is back on stage, talking about the sewage system of the building. Or actually the absence of one.

“Imagine TEDxAmsterdam asking you to come back and talk about poop. Well, I guess that’s human nature too; we want to know everything about our poop.” All right Louise, you’ve got our attention. In her 2009 TEDxAmsterdam talk, Louise made a distinction between our current linear economy (take-make-waste) and nature’s circular economy, where waste is food and energy comes from the sun. If we conitnue on the linear economy, we destroy our natural habitat for energy, food and resources. Louise suggests to learn from nature and change to a circular economy because “in nature there is no waste.”

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Practice what you preach

When NIOO needed a new building Louise decided that it should be circular. “The challenge was not to limit environmental damage, but to make a valuable contribution to the surrounding environment”, Louise explains. How was this done? By closing ALL cycles; the energy cycle by using solar energy and a revolutionary system for the storage of warm water, but also the water- and nutrient cycles.

The essential phosphorus

With regard to the nutrient cycle, Louise focuses on phosphorus: “Phosphorus is an essential and irreplaceable element for all forms of life and it’s not renewable.” Since the middle of the twentieth century, we have quadrupled the environmental flow of phosphorus. And even though we’re running out of it, we don’t recycle phosphorus where possible. Instead it runs off into the oceans, where it not only pollutes our freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems, it also becomes unaivalable for life.

Photo: Jan-Jaap Heine

Poop is gold

“Phosphorus is in our DNA, bones, blood, but also in our feces and urine,” Louise explains. So, we can win phosphorus by re-using our poop! And that’s what’s done in the new NIOO building. Instead of using the regular sewage system, this system is also closed within the building. The water that’s used to rinse the toilets is cleaned in a process that produces biogas and feeds phosphorus and other nutrients to algae. These algae can, in turn, be harvested to manufacture bioplastics, animal food, biodiesel and many other things. “Our poop is not waste, it is valuable food!”

Luyendijk makes complicated problems understable and even fun by using the opportunities of Internet journalism.

AAAAAAAARGH! With a scream from this toes, Dutch journalist Joris Luyendijk demonstrates the frustration he experiences regularly when he is confronted with the complexity of world problems.

Despite this frustration, he has accepted the great challenge: by using the opportunities of Internet journalism, he tries to make complicated problems understandable and even fun. Luyendijk is a journalist, the author of four books, and currently keeps a banking blog for The Guardian. In this project, his mission is to discover – by almost anthropological methods – the unwritten rules of bankers’ code of conduct. In his posts, he points out the position of women in the city of London, elevator gossip tweets and the reasons why Karl Marx would make a good hedge fund manager. He certainly does meet his objective to make finance interesting and entertaining.

Manipulation in the City

His banking blog provides the opportunity to speak with some rather remarkable people. He tells the story of one of the recruiters he met in the financial district of London. “A recruiter told me that she had completely changed, and ended up cheating, lying and manipulating in order to headhunt talented bankers from their competitors. The worst part, she said, was that she was good at it.”

Internet’s help to understand our world

One of the basic tenets of his approach is that he makes use of the input of readers. As Luyendijk learns more about a new topic, he invites his readers to ask him their questions. Their questions and suggestions contributed to his series on electrical cars for NRC Handelsblad as well as his current banking blog. Whilst discovering these topics himself, Luyendijk directly shares his newly acquired knowledge with the readers.

Through these projects, Luyendijk discovered the great function of the Internet as a tool to share his learning curve. The big advantage of the Internet is that it circumvents the difficulties of print media. With his weekly colum on electrical cars, he would discuss a certain topic, such as buffer capacity. Then the next week, in the new column, he would have to explain this complicated topic again for new readers, whilst experienced readers would be bored. Internet is to the rescue.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Share your own learning curve

The great thing about the Internet, Luyendijk says, is that he is able to put all these surprises on his learning curve – all the little lightbulbs, as he says – on the web and make them visible to the public. On the blog, he doesn’t have the problem he had with the electrical car columns. “Now, we can build a department store of brain food. In this store, new clients are welcomed by a personal shopper who explains the basics. Regular customers are pointed to the corner with the new collection”. Join Joris step by step as he gives insight in his learning curve. Or even better: dig in a topic about which you don’t know anything and share your own learning curve on the web!

Using education and employment to bring peace in Afghanistan. As an Afghan refugee, Hassina returned to her homecountry to help defeat the Taliban in her own way.

As founder and CEO of Aid Afghanistan for Education and Crafting Peace with Boumi, Hassina Sherjan has her own contribution to fighting terrorism in Afghanistan. Not with bombs and weapons, but by raising the confidence of Afghan people for a better future through education and creating jobs.

Hassina was born and raised in Afghanistan and moved to the United States in 1978, two months before the Russian invasion. In the US, Hassina was a succesful business woman, but her life changed after her dad died. His last words, “I want you to live your life like you want to, because I didn’t”, inspired Hassina to go back to her roots.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Afghan refugees

Due to the factional war in Afghanistan, the closest she could get was Pakistan, where she visited the Afghan refugee camps. “There a young woman came up to me and said, ‘which one of my twin babies you think is strong enough to keep, because I can’t afford to keep both.’” With great emotion, Hassina illustrates the desperation she encountered there. She also met Afghan women learning to read for the very first time, craving for more saying: “What else? What else?”

Educating Afghan girls and women

“I didn’t have to lose sleep over what I wanted to do with my life anymore. Now I lost sleep over what I could do for these people.” In 1999. Hassina returned to Afghanistan and established five clandestine classes for 250 girls. Later, in 2003 when the Taliban was displaced, Hassina established Aid Afghanistan for Education, an organisation that strived to expand educational opportunities for girls and young women in Afghanistan. “Today, nine years later, we have 3200 female students in nine provinces, providing high levels of education for marginalized young Afghans who wouldn’t have acces to education otherwise.”

Beat the Taliban with jobs

In order to beat the Taliban and create peace in Afghanistan, Hassina thinks the focus should not only be on education, but also on economic development and employment. That’s why Hassina started Boumi, a home accessory business that uses Afghan resources, skills and workforce. “Boumi is a business, a philosophy and a movement.” A movement for crafting peace.

Photo: Maurice Mikkers

Crafting peace with peace birds

To conquer the European market, Boumi collaborated with Butterflyworks, a Dutch foundation supporting local companies with product development and marketing in Europe. Together they founded the new brand Crafting Peace, Hassina tells us as she shows us the peace bird cushions. “As part of the co-creation, Boumi workers were asked how they felt about Boumi, Afghanistan and their lives. The adjectives they mentioned were written in Farsi calligraphy. The designers of Butterflyworks created these designs using these letters as their inspiration.”

Your help is needed!

“My energy comes from the commitment that the Afghan people have for creating a better life,” Hassina explains how fulfilling and rewarding her work is. Still, Hassina can’t do everything by herself. We can join her in her quest for peace by purchasing the Crafting Peace collection, and helping Boumi to create more employment. Or by (financially) supporting Aid Afghanistan for Education, for only $1 per day you can support a student, to expand to more provinces and educate as many young Afghans as possible. Because, as Hassina told us: “Education and employment are the real future of Afghanistan.”

As the saxophonist of Calefax, Raaf Hekkema already blew us away at TEDxAmsterdam 2010. Raaf, Wiek Hijmans and Joshua Samson form Raaven, a pop-style baroque ensemble. They just helped us discover the sources of pop.

Raaven plays 17th-century music on today’s instruments, with the mindset of the here and now. “Did you ever think about calling yourself Baroque and Roll?” host Jim asked Raaf after the impressive performance. Jim was right, Raaven rocked!

Using a guitar, a saxophone and a hang drum Raaven took the audience and didn’t let go for ten minutes. A performance that was just as wonderful as unique. And that’s not all for the lucky TEDxAmsterdan audience, we all got Raaven’s CD to listen to more of their beautiful music at home!
