History

The neo-renaissance building has two wooden predecessors, both of which burnt down (in 1772 and 1774). The present building has been a haven for high culture since 1894.While most venues in this vibrant area offer entertainment in the form of beer and sports, the Stadsschouwburg is home to Amsterdam’s acclaimed theater group, the Toneelgroep Amsterdam, and other well-known cultural activities, like the yearly Ball of Books. On the first floor, try the steak sandwich for lunch, or the excellent fish selection for dinner, in the grand café and restaurant Stanislavski.

Once inside this beautiful venue, you’re taken back to a romantic nineteenth century age. The red carpets, grandiose chandeliers and the U-shaped auditorium are a fitting setting to the innovative ideas that will be shared at this year’s TEDxAmsterdam.
